Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The Royal St Helena Police (RSHP) comprises of a Chief of Police, a Detective Chief Inspector, three Inspectors, five Sergeants and 20 Constables based on St. Helena and one Inspector, one Sergeant and three Constables based on Ascension Island. RSHP uniform sergeants are our first level of line management and perform a vital role in ensuring effective daily supervision, guidance, development and support of officers and staff whilst ensuring that RSHP standards are met and objectives achieved. They co-ordinate, monitor and respond where necessary, to front line policing activity to uphold the law, enable public safety and build community confidence in policing in line with legal frameworks and policy guidelines. Sometimes acting as Custody Officer, your duties will include instigating and supervising criminal investigations, crime scene management, event planning, community policing and being part of the Sergeants’ on-call rota. Preparing prosecution files as well as being a ‘gatekeeper’ for files, you will fulfil disclosure obligations under CPIA and manage your team’s operational resources. As you mentor local officers and assist in building capability and capacity, you will undertake training needs analysis and develop training plans. You are PIP1 trained or equivalent (or higher). Qualified and with operational experience as a uniform response or community sergeant, you will have acted as Custody Officer and have broad policing experience in various operational environments. You have practical knowledge and understanding of current policing challenges, efficiency and diversity issues, having applied the National Decision Model in operational situations. You can identify, analyse, and manage risk to inform balanced, proportionate evidenced-based decisions. Able to review and assess your own, individual and team performance against expected standards, you can give objective and effective feedback for corrective actions. In addition, you must demonstrate your commitment to the RSHP Code of Ethics and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
